TVG: With The Sims 2, something of a modding community was built up with user generated content, but this time around you’re really embracing user created content. Will you have a marketing strategy for that at all, or are you planning to serve up all that sort of content for free?

Yeah, absolutely. For The Sims 2 we did Body Shop, so we released a separate program that allowed players to customise their sims and stuff like that. In The Sims 3 we’re actually incorporating a lot of those tools that we released into the game itself, so you do all of the uploading, sharing and alike in-game. What we would love to do is make it even easier, allowing the player to customise even more. They can then post it to the exchange and see what other people have made but all within our standard, so there’s nothing too graphic – no decapitations.

On top of all this expanded creativity, The Sims 3 is also due to come with some fairly powerful video editing tools. As many of you know, The Sims 2 has become a popular choice for people making spoof films and the like, and this time around Maxis is looking to embrace such machinima right from the get-go. Details are fairly scarce at the moment, but we do know that the system will be designed for easy uploading to YouTube. This sounds like a pretty smart move to me.

Now Gamer over De Sims 3

EA has seen fit to cut down character ‘motives’ to simply reflect their sleep, fun, food and bathroom-based needs, a move that will reduce micromanagement but could lead to a less involved experience. Hopefully this will be offset by the refined system of wishes and ambitions for each character, with similar goal-based gameplay to the console versions being introduced, which again could potentially make or break this all-encompassing sequel.

Rest assured, gamers won’t be starved for content in the final game, with plenty of tools and features that will broaden their gameplay experience. As with The Sims 2, much of the modding will be committed through various character customisations, with EA now opening its doors for modifications of fabrics and designs that users can create or download from other Sims players. But even without these mods the character customisation is still notably deep, making it possible for gamers to create characters as obscure as an old man in slippers and a dressing gown with purple skin and fluorescent green cornrows.

In terms of actual Sims’ nature though, the core of the game is the personality traits, which replace the statistic-tweaking of the first. I spend a lot of time talking about the personality traits, because I think that’s the heart of The Sims 3, argues Chun. So rather than spending points in characteristics, with you ending up as Lazy or Energetic depending how many you spend in the category, you choose up to five attributes, each of which has a distinct effect on a sim’s personality. Rather than the fuzziness, things now have clean edges. The cool thing is that we’re not making value judgments about anything, says MJ Chun. You can be evil, and not feel bad. That’s something which is very Sims. We’re giving the same level of importance to being Friendly or Lucky, being a Snob or being a Vegetarian.
