Not all the system-unique offerings augment the experience. For example, the “Karma Powers” feel like a gimmick that most developers learned to abandon shortly into the original DS’s life cycle. The so-called powers let players unleash a variety of effects, both good and bad, on their Sims by blowing into the system’s microphone or shaking the 3DS. Considering these effects must first be selected through an in-game menu, the gestures seem like an unnecessary second step to playing god.

Don’t get me wrong – I love The Sims, having played the first two iterations on the PC, with all the expansion packs. And I was rather excited at the prospect of being able to play The Sims 3 on a console – so excited in fact, I walked all the way up to Tesco in the rain on the day after it launched to buy me a copy, and paid £39.70 for the privilege. Continuing the trend of bringing The Sims 3 to console owners, EA are now going to release it for the upcoming 3DS. But all we got to play was this demo!

Ik zag het beginscherm van De Sims 3 voor de DS, wat ik al vermoedde. Zal het dan toch een opgepoetste 3D-versie zijn van de DS-game? Ik ging een Sim maken en keek meteen naar alle opties die beschikbaar waren. Het zag er erg goed uit; ik kan zeggen dat het er zeker uitzag als De Sims 2 op de PC in hoge kwaliteit. Het zag er top uit en ik zag niet snel een pixel. Er waren wel wat haarstijlen, maar ik vond het niet echt veel. De kleding had wel wat meer keuze en het zag er dan ook goed uit. Toen ik eindelijk eens wens had gekozen nadat ik de eigenschappen had ingevoerd, zei de dame dat je alleen een Sim kon maken. Daar was de teleurstelling. Maar ik moet niet zeuren, ik heb gewoon wel even een Sim ermee kunnen maken!
